- How it works
- It is usually the last stage of washing. Garments go through a bath with a silicone emulsion that coats the fibres and reduces friction between them. They are then spun and dried without heavy rinsing, so the softener stays in the garment.
- Result
- A silky, soft hand with good drape. Colour and appearance barely change; the effect is mainly tactile.
- Best applications
- Garments where comfort to the touch is a priority, on its own or as the final step after other washes.
- Garments it is commonly used on
- Jeans, shirts, T-shirts, sweatshirts and knitwear in general.
- Care points and remarks
- Softener can reduce the fabric's water absorbency and make later printing or bonding harder, so the order of steps matters.
